2006 Maine Skirmish Grappling Championships

(PRWEB) October 19, 2006 -- Maine Skirmish Grappling Tournament to take place on Sunday November 12, 2006.

Location: WHS Winslow, Maine
Time: 10:30am – 7:00pm

General information:
The Maine Skirmish is a free style ground-fighting event for all ages.

The Styles range from jujutsu to wrestling, judo and sambo among others.

Events include junior Sumo, junior grappling and submission wrestling for adults.

The event is the 11th Maine Skirmish since 1996.

Grappling found much popularity after the Ultimate fighting Championship

In the early 1990’s began. Before such stand up martial arts like karate and kung fu dominated interest in America. Today grappling is among the top styles practiced in our country. The Skirmish allows all age levels to test their technique in an open mat format.

Competition is always more about learning ones strengths and weaknesses. This open mat event is a fun way to improve and meet fellow practitioners all over the New England regions.

Sumo, Japan’s national sport is a simple combative game of push, pull and toss. Each fighter tries to remove his or her adversary from the playing service or down to the ground. Sumo is an exciting event and the children have so much fun being involved.

Submission grappling is all about body positioning, conditioning and skill. Each player at an adult level seeks to place their opponent in positions allowing them to perhaps control the outcome of the match, or score a submission and gain instant victory. Popular submissions at the Maine Skirmish include famous martial arts techniques like arm bars, chokes and leg locks! The game is all in good sport and each fighter offers their opponent a chance to give up or “say uncle” without injury occurring.

On Sunday November 12th, kids ages 4 –17 will be competing in the morning and early afternoon at the Winslow High School. Adult competitions including Maine championship belt title fights will occur later in the afternoon and early into the evening.

The event is open to the public and tickets are $7. For more information you may call Huard’s Martial Arts at 207 873-0407.
